My experience buying opals at an opal exhibition in search of new opals.

Among gemstones, opals are especially fascinating. Each opal is unique, with its own beautiful colors and patterns. Recently, I visited an opal fair to search for and purchase new opals.

At the entrance to the opal fair, I felt both excited and a little nervous.

What kind of place is an opal exhibition?

An opal fair is an event where jewelers, wholesalers, and miners from different opal mining regions of Australia come together to display and sell opals, jewelry, and rough stones.

It is a great opportunity to see rare black opals, crystal opals, loose stones, and new jewelry designs in person. The fair usually lasts for two days and attracts people from the opal and jewelry industry, as well as opal enthusiasts.

One of the biggest advantages of attending an opal fair is being able to compare many loose opals of different colors, patterns, sizes, and prices in one place.

Seeing the stones in person is very important. You can examine the depth of color, brightness, and patterns much more clearly than you can from photographs.

Buyers gather at the fair in search of rare and beautiful opals.

What I looked for when buying opals

  One of the most attractive features of opal is its play of color. The colors can change dramatically depending on the angle and the light, so I carefully examined each stone from different angles.

  I paid particular attention to stones with strong, bright flashes of color.

• Transparency and pattern

  Crystal opals can have beautiful transparency, allowing light to enter the stone and bring out their colors.

  Every opal also has its own unique pattern, almost like a small piece of art created by nature.

  Black opals are especially prized for their dark body tone and strong play of color, but this time I was also particularly interested in crystal opals.

  I talked with several wholesalers and carefully compared the stones before making my purchases.

Some of the opals I purchased will now be transformed into jewelry. I will work with artisans to decide on designs that best suit each stone.

Because every opal has its own shape, colors, and character, the jewelry can be designed to highlight the individuality of each stone.
